Across Europe, Roque Santa Cruz found the net for Real Betis who pulled off an unexpected 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid. The Paraguayan doubled his side’s advantage in the final minute as Betis inflicted a first home defeat of the season on Sergio Aguero’s former side.
Vladimir Weiss played 45 minutes as Espanyol climbed to seventh with a 2-1 win away at Sporting Gijon, while David Gonzalez watched Aberdeen’s 1-0 win over Hibernian from the bench.
Dedryck Boyata travels to Blackburn tonight with Bolton in the battle of the bottom two, whereas Tottenham were in action at the weekend in their bid to recover from last week’s shock defeat at Stoke. Emmanuel Adebayor was present as ever in the Spurs’ starting line-up but it was strike partner Roman Pavlyuchenko who scored the game’s only goal to earn Harry Redknapp’s side all three points.
Defensive duo Kieran Trippier and Ben Mee were in fine attacking form for Burnley, who beat high-flying Brighton to secure their place in the top half of the Championship. While Mee’s 35-yard strike was unlucky not to find the back of the net, it was Trippier who scored the only goal of the game against nine-man Brighton to claim victory.
Reece Wabara’s Ipswich followed up last week’s mammoth 5-3 win over Barnsley with a first home win since October. Though Wabara spent the game on the bench, the Tractor Boys completed back-to-back victories by beating Derby 1-0.
Greg Cunningham and Ryan McGivern met as struggling sides Nottingham Forest and Bristol City could only manage a goalless draw between them and Harry Bunn’s Rochdale were also unable to break the deadlock in their League One stalemate with ten-man Yeovil.
There was better luck, however, for Charlton – the Italian lasting 66 minutes of the 1-1 draw.
