Manchester City are delighted to announce Caroline Weir as our second signing of the summer.

The forward joins from Liverpool Ladies on a two-year-deal, having netted six goals over the course of the 2017/18 season.

The 22-year-old secured Scotland’s Player of the Year Award in 2016 and is looking forward to joining some of her international team mates in Manchester and challenging for trophies in the coming season.

“I’m really excited to be here. It’s a great club and I’m really delighted to be a part of it,” Weir told ManCity.com. “City are leading the way in the women’s game in so many different ways.

“There are so many great players here and I think it’s a challenge to compete for trophies and try to improve – which is what brought me here.

“I’ve spoken to Claire Emslie a little bit already as I know her very well, she’s excited for me to join and I saw Jen Beattie earlier as well – it’s great to see some familiar faces, but I’m excited to meet the rest of my team mates too.”

Weir, who has moved through the ranks at Arsenal, Bristol City and Liverpool describes herself as an attacking midfielder who is eager to create. The Scot likes to be amongst the goals and has been described as having a habit for scoring long-range strikes.

While the Dunfermline-born midfielder is keen to play alongside fellow Scots Emslie and Beattie, Weir is also excited to link up with City stars such as Keira Walsh and Nadia Nadim.

“Every time I have played against Man City it’s always been a very tough game as they have so many good players, so it’s fantastic to play alongside them instead,” the new-recruit explained.

“I’m really looking forward to linking up with Keira Walsh – she’s been very successful and is a very talented young player. She will be great to play with.

“I’m also looking forward to linking up with Nadia Nadim as she’s a brilliant striker.”

Her new manager, Nick Cushing explained: “Caroline is a player with real technical ability, and someone who we know will strengthen our squad.

“She has a desire to improve her game and we feel with our squad at Manchester City she can play her best football here.

“She will give our squad balance and give us another attacking threat moving into the 18/19 season.”

While our new number 19 is excited to challenge for the FA Women’s Super League title, the Continental Tyres Cup and the FA Cup, Weir has her eyes firmly set on European action.

“I’m most excited about playing in the Champions League next season,” she added. “The team did so well getting to the semi-final last year.

“It’s a great competition to play in and something you always want to compete in as a player.

“I haven’t been part of the competition for a few years so I’m excited to see how far we can get!”
