Practice makes perfect, they say, and Carli Lloyd has had plenty when it comes to scoring goals in the World Cup.

Her sweetly struck opener in the United States’ 3-0 win over Chile was testament to her enduring quality at the highest level, but also carried greater significance for the former City player, who continues to write her name into the history books.

A former World Player of the Year, Lloyd’s 11th minute strike in Paris made her the first player to score in six consecutive Women’s World Cup matches.

The 36-year-old added a second before half-time to claim another record, that goal making her the oldest player in the tournament’s history to score more than once in a game.

Lloyd was the star of the 2015 World Cup, scoring a hat-trick in the final as the US won their third title and she’s continued where she left off in the latest instalment of the competition.

She has three goals from the opening two games, despite emerging from the bench in the opening win over Thailand.

Her first goal against Chile, pictured above, was a reminder of the skills which have made her such a special player.

The speed of thought and determination to get to Su Helen Galaz’s clearance first and the technical brilliance to arc a half volley into the bottom corner.

A great goal from one of the game’s greats.
