Nick Cushing’s side suffered heartbreak at the hands of Atletico Madrid for the second successive season, edged out of the Champions League by a 3-2 aggregate score against the Spanish Champions.

Although deeply disappointed, Campbell notes City responded to last year’s setback in the competition by clinching a Cup double, lifting the FA Cup and Continental Cup – and clinching a top two finish in the league to secure another European place.
With her side having suffered three straight defeats for the first time since 2015, the Republic of Ireland admits her side are struggling at the moment but hold the quality and mental strength to fight back to further glory.
“We know we’re in a bad patch at the moment,” she conceded, “but we’re a strong group – tight together.
“The players have been in these situations before on both international and club level so we’re experienced in that respect.
“We have to dig deep. We know how good we are and how good we can be – we’ve shown that in the past.
“The main aim now is to win all three trophies domestically – and we’re not going to stop until we do.”
City have little time to dwell on the midweek disappointment with Sunday’s Continental Cup visit of Birmingham to the Academy Stadium.
Campbell believes the quick turnaround can work in her side’s favour, as the cup holders look to bounce back immediately with a much-improved performance on home soil.
“I think we need a game soon after to get our heads past the Champions League one,” she declared. “We can focus on the next one.
“We know we can go into the game against Birmingham, able to carry what we did from the Atletico game into it.
“We have the Conti Cup; then the international break and then we come back for the league again.
“We’re not stopping – we’re looking forward to getting back on the training pitch so we can put things right.
“We’re ready to regroup and go again.”
City face Birmingham in the Continental Cup group stage on Sunday 3 November (2pm). Ticket for all home games are available online and at the Etihad Stadium Ticket Office.
