City took the Manchester derby bragging rights as Caroline Weir’s stunning goal secured a historic victory over United.

It was the first-ever professional Manchester women’s derby – and the occasion saw a crowd of more than 31,000 flock to the Etihad, creating a new league attendance record.

And Scottish World Cup star Weir marked the landmark moment in fittings style with a stunning second half strike.

It proved a hugely entertaining affair for the fans with United edging the first half with City keeper producing a stunning save to deny Jane Ross.

But Nick Cushing’s side upped the tempo after the break with Weir firing home from more than 25 yards with a wonderful effort.
