TACTICS

As ever, it’s a fluid 4-3-3 formation for Pep Guardiola.

Ederson starts in goal. He played in Tuesday’s win over Club Brugge after missing last weekend’s Premier League win over Burnley. As ever, his distribution, both long and short, will be key to City’s build-up play.

Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo will be tasked with adding numbers going forward from full-back. Walker will play close to the touchline on the right, providing an overlap for Gabriel Jesus, while Cancelo is often asked to step inside and numbers in central areas.

Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte start at centre-back and will look to continue their flourishing partnership.

Rodrigo will screen the back four, with Ilkay Gundogan’s guile and Bernardo Silva’s energy ahead of him. That’s a midfield three that has everything.

Jesus is likely to play from the right of our attacking trio, with Jack Grealish on the left and Phil Foden playing centrally as a False 9.

It’s a side full of invention, pace and attacking intent, as well as hard work and tactical understanding.

Brighton, who sit fourth in the table, just two points behind City, have enjoyed a fine start to the season.

PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW

“I enjoy watching Brighton, they are an exceptional team.

“The team is in really good condition.

“We have done it, not ‘I’ have done it. I’m a part of a process. You cannot imagine how I am supported unconditionally.

“Of course, the players are the main reason are there but all staff backroom staff, all the success is because WE have done it.

“People believe we are responsible. The influence we have is much more minor than it actually is. In society, you want to point at one person, it’s difficult to understand everyone is involved.

“Never have I felt that ‘I’ won a game. It’s a team.”

      FORM GUIDE

City sit third in the Premier League table, two points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

The Blues are unbeaten in the league since the opening day loss to Spurs, winning five and drawing twice.

Brighton have made an excellent start to the 2021/22 campaign.

Graham Potter’s side are fourth in the table, two points behind City having also lost just one of their eight Premier League games.

      LAST TIME OUT

Goals from Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne gave City a deserved 2-0 victory over Burnley at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday.

City then beat Club Brugge 5-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday to make it 11 goals from three Group A matches.

Brighton were held 0-0 by bottom-of-the-table Norwich City last Saturday – a disappointing result considering their impressive start.

          STATS

Having lost their first seven Premier League games against City by an aggregate score of 21-2, Brighton came from 0-2 down to win 3-2 in their last such meeting in May.

          • City have never lost back-to-back league meetings with Brighton, overall losing just four of their 22 previous games against the Seagulls (W14 D4 L4).
          • Brighton scored more goals in their last match against City (3) than they had in their previous eight games against them in all competitions (2).
          • Each of Brighton’s last three Premier League games have finished level, with their last two finishing 0-0. Since their promotion to the competition in 2017, the Seagulls have had more draws (53) and more goalless draws (19) than any other side in the competition.
          • Since their 3-2 defeat against Brighton in May, City have conceded just three further goals in nine Premier League games (W6 D2 L1), keeping seven clean sheets in that run. Including that loss at Brighton, each of the Blues’ last seven goals conceded in the competition have come in the second half of games.
          • Between them, City (12) and Brighton (21) have faced the fewest shots on target in the Premier League this season, while they are also two of the three sides to have the lowest goals against totals in the competition this term (City 4.8, Brighton 8.1).
          • Brighton have been shown more yellow cards than any other side in the Premier League this season (22), with no player picking up more bookings than Seagulls defender Joël Veltman (4).
          • No player has created more chances from set plays this season than Brighton’s Pascal Gross (11), while of all players with at least 10 chances created this term, the German has the highest share from set piece situations (69% - 11/16).
          • City’s Raheem Sterling has scored four goals in four Premier League starts against Brighton, netting a hat-trick on his last visit to the Amex Stadium in July 2020. However, Sterling has scored just once from 13 attempts in the Premier League so far this season.
          •  City’s Kevin De Bruyne has scored in consecutive Premier League games for the first time since September 2020. Only once before has the Belgian scored in three consecutive appearances in the competition, doing so in September/October 2015
