Ilkay Gundogan said the nature of City’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Leeds served as the perfect illustration as to what it took to retain the Premier League title.

Despite a dominant first half display against Sam Allardyce’s side, which saw Gundogan score twice, a late Rodrigo goal for the visitors made for a tense last few minutes.

Gundogan had the chance to make the game safe and bag a first ever City hat-trick but saw an 82nd minute penalty hit the post before Leeds scored.

And reflecting on what was our 10th successive Premier League win, the German midfielder said it was a textbook example of the exacting demands of the English top flight.

“Probably, the best warning is today,” the City skipper reflected.

“But we have an experienced team and have had these kinds of run-ins in recent years.

“Leeds made it difficult for us, defended really well. But the way we approached the game from the start was really good.

“We created a lot of chances and the only negative was that we were not able to score a third.”

“We know what to do to keep the momentum going and winning games.

“Nothing more but also nothing less.”

Gundogan also spoke the decision that saw him rather than Erling Haaland opt to take that second half penalty which subsequently hit the post.

Within 60 seconds Leeds had raced up field to score to set up that nervy finale and to illustrate how the nature of a match can switch in an instant.

“The moment Erling grabbed the ball, I was sure he was going to take it but he looked out for me,” Gundogan added.

“I checked with him a few times to make sure he was sure. He was certain to hand the ball to me.

“I was confident to score. I can’t even remember if the keeper saved it or it was the post? We should have scored a third.

“This is sometimes how it is that they go on the counter and score. Things can change, momentum can shift.

“But we dealt quite well with it and deserved the three points.”
