Joleon Lescott says that winning games is helping to keep the Manchester City players fresh as we enter the crucial final weeks of the season.

Pep Guardiola’s side made it 11 straight wins in the Premier League and extended our unbeaten run to 22 matches as we moved to within three points of a third successive title with a 3-0 victory at Everton.

Lescott, who was one of the special guests on Sunday’s Matchday Live show, says the players will be energised by the winning momentum.

“You only get tired or feel knocks when you lose,” the former City defender said. “When you’re winning you just carry on and get through it.

“When the winning continues you feel fresh and the buzz around the place will be better. All of a sudden if you lose games it can halt that momentum.”

Victory at Goodison Park, coupled with Arsenal’s defeat at Brighton, means that City can claim the Premier League trophy at the weekend with a win over Chelsea or if the Gunners lose again on Saturday at Nottingham Forest.

But a win at Everton was all-important and was tough test against a team fighting for survival and on the back of a spectacular 5-1 win at Brighton ahead of the clash.

Lescott, who joined City from the Toffees, knows how important it is to try keep their home fans quiet.

“At Goodison Park, momentum can change with a throw-in or a tackle or a chance on goal,” he said.  “But when you nullify that threat it does go flat and becomes an easier place to play.

“You’ve got to give credit to the lads because they were so professional the way they went about their business.

“Obviously towards the end they were conserving energy in regards to the fixtures coming up but the only way you can quieten Everton fans and that stadium is by controlling the game and not allowing it to get built up or give any encouragement.”

The big games keep coming with the Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

While Guardiola went with a strong line-up against Everton, Carlo Ancelotti made eight changes for their La Liga clash with Getafe and Shaun Goater understands why the Italian took a different approach.

“Their squad is a hugely experienced squad so they don’t really need to be doing minutes,” the ex-City striker said. “They all understand how to get through games and arrive at big games fresh and ready.

“Most managers that have a squad at that age are trying to rest them so they arrive at their optimum.”

But fellow guest Gareth Taylor said that doesn’t necessarily give the current Champions League holders an advantage and says City are at their best when they are playing regularly.

“This team shows its best when it plays every few days continually gaining momentum and control,” the City Women’s boss said.

“It’s rest or rhythm. I think the way Real Madrid play it suits them and the older players they have like [Luka] Modric, [Toni] Kroos and [Karim] Benzema – they probably need a rest. But I think City are at their best when they are playing every few days.”
