Pep Guardiola preview
“I am really excited for this season that is coming. I am really happy here. Like every season I definitely need a break but after that I recharge my batteries and I have the same energy as usual.
“I know the competition is coming and I am completely focused on that especially for my club.
“I want to see all of them. I am curious to see Macca [James McAtee] especially after coming back from Sheffield United.
“We have a high opinion of him. I would like to see. I would love to have him next season with us - he can play in the small spaces in the pockets.
“I think he grew up in terms of physicality and has played for a team fighting relegation and when you do this you get something special.
“I know him well and know his potential - he has to play good for himself and the team.”
Team news
Pep Guardiola has handed Erling Haaland the captain’s armband and two youngsters their senior debuts in our pre-season opener against Celtic.
The Norwegian will lead the side out for the first time at the Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Meanwhile, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey and Nico O’Reilly are both set to start in our clash with the Scottish champions, having made their way through the Club’s youth system.
Several other members of our Elite Development Squad could also figure for City from the bench as we look to claim victory in the first of four friendlies as part of our US Tour.
There are some familiar faces in the starting XI though, with Stefan Ortega Moreno, Rico Lewis, Kalvin Phillips, Oscar Bobb and Jack Grealish all included.
City XI: Ortega Moreno, Lewis, Simpson-Pusey, Mbete, Wilson-Esbrand, Phillips, O’Reilly, McAtee, Bobb, Grealish, Haaland.
Subs: Ederson, Carson, Perrone, Wright, Katongo, Ndala, Galvez, Susoho, Oboavwoduo, Heskey, Doyle, Fatah, Mfuni, Hamilton, Samuel, Knight.
CELTIC’S 2023/24
Celtic claimed a third straight Scottish Premier League title last season and successfully defended the Scottish Cup to claim a domestic double.
Recovering from back-to-back defeats in December, Brendan Rodgers’ side lost just once in the league in the new year to claim top spot – eight points clear of Rangers.
Adam Idah’s late strike also earned a 1-0 win over their rivals in the cup final at Hampden Park.
On a European front, Celtic reached the group stages of the Champions League but finished bottom of a group containing Feyenoord, Lazio and Atletico Madrid.
PREVIOUS MEETING
A Champions League group fixture at the Etihad in December 2016 represented the last time City and Celtic played.
Patrick Roberts, on loan from Guardiola’s side at the time, broke the deadlock for the visitors when he skipped past a couple of challenges before curling wonderfully past Willy Caballero.
However, the first goal of the match sparked City into life and we were level only five minutes later.
Noilito retrieved possession in the middle of the field and spotted Kelechi Iheanacho’s clever run, who beat the offside trap, to collect the ball and rifle into the roof of the net.
Surprisingly, that turned out to be the final goal of the game as honours were even in Manchester.
