PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW
Pep Guardiola has confirmed that City’s England EURO 2024 trio of Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and John Stones as well as Spanish star Rodrigo will not be available for selection for Saturday’s Community Shield clash against Manchester United.
A number of our players who were involved in the summer showpiece in Germany returned to training this week, including Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku and Manuel Akanji along with the Club’s Portuguese contingent.
But, speaking at his pre-match press conference, the boss confirmed that Foden, Stones and Walker, who helped England reach the EURO 2024 final, along with Rodrigo, who lifted the trophy with Spain, would not return to training until next week.
“We try to give them the best rest as possible as much as possible. We would like more time but it is what it is, we gave them a lot,” Guardiola said.
“All the players came back, the England players and Rodri will come back next week. What we like to give them is what it is, don’t think about the schedule.
“What’s next, training sessions, it’s just step by step, the next game, try to be smart enough to the training and the right amount of time, so be fresh in the mind.
“So rotate the players as much as possible, and game by game we’ll see what happens.”
PREVIOUS MEETING
City suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the 2024 FA Cup final the last time the sides met.
First-half goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo gave Erik ten Hag’s side the advantage at the break before Jeremy Doku halved the deficit in the 87th minute.
LAST TIME OUT
City closed our pre-season tour of the United States with an entertaining 4-2 win over Chelsea in our previous outing.
An Erling Haaland hat-trick, two of which came in the opening five minutes, and Oscar Bobb strike earned Pep Guardiola’s men a deserved victory in our final friendly ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
Former City man Raheem Sterling pulled one back for Chelsea before the hour and Noni Madueke added a second late on, but it did little to dampen what was a convincing display from Guardiola’s men.
TV INFORMATION
City’s clash with our cross-city rivals will be broadcast in the United Kingdom on ITV 1, ITVX and STV.
