Rico Lewis has spoken of his ‘happiness’ at being back in the team for the 2-1 win over Leeds United.

Lewis has been introduced to the senior set-up by Pep Guardiola this term, with the boss hailing his courage and commitment as vital factors in City’s search for success in 2022/23.

His last start in all competitions was March’s 6-0 win over Burnley in the FA Cup while his last start in the Premier League was the 4-1 away win at Bournemouth in February.

He returned to the side on Saturday in the inverted full-back role and impressed as City clocked up our 10th Premier League win in succession.

Lewis was thrilled to be on the team sheet again.

On his emotions at the full-time whistle, he said: “Overall happiness.

“To be back playing football with the rest of the lads is what I dream of every day.

“Even though I’ve not played for a while, I think I got back into it pretty quickly and we ended up with the result that we wanted. I’m very happy.”

Lewis played all 90 minutes in a win that would have been more comfortable had it not been for Rodrigo Moreno’s late effort five minutes from time which set up a tense final few moments.

The 18-year-old admitted it gave the team ‘a bit of a shock’ but he was just happy to collect  a vital three points as we eye another Premier League crown.

On the result, he added: “Definitely a bit of relief but we had control of the whole game.

“In the Premier League you never know what can happen. Every team has got quality and if you give them the chance, they’ll punish you.

“We didn’t put the game to bed early enough and had a bit of a shock.

“The team reacted to it, and we ended up with the result which is all we needed.

“We still played really well and dominated the whole game. It’s something to learn from.”

City now have four games remaining in the Premier League – Everton (away), Chelsea (home), Brighton (away) and Brentford (away), a two-leg Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid and an all-Manchester FA Cup final.

Lewis is ready to play his part as he aims to maintain the ‘trust’ boss Guardiola has in him.

On his ambitions, he added: “Just to make sure I perform as best as I can and to do the best that I know that I can do. That’s the main goal.

“It’s something I want every day - just to be playing regularly and it will come with time but it’s important the manager can trust me.”
