Pep Guardiola hailed the ‘mindset and mentality’ of his team following their impressive 1-0 win over Newcastle United.

Despite the exertions of our Treble-winning success across 2022/23, Guardiola’s City have opened up the new season with two Premier League victories as well as a first-ever win in the UEFA Super Cup – our fourth trophy of this calendar year.

The boss has been thrilled with the start to this campaign and he believes it’s testament to the character of his sky blues.

“It’s the second game of the season but it proves why we won a lot,” the boss told the media post-match.

“The mindset and mentality of this group of players is amazing every time and surprises me every time.

“Against that team and in the conditions that we arrive, with a lot of injuries and no rest, how they run and the commitment for everyone it was absolutely amazing.

“We played really good and deserved to win. We could have scored more goals.

“Against Newcastle, we saw it against Aston Villa and last season.

“The difference with this group is the mentality for many, many years. Last year they did it and in the second game today they have done it. Nothing changes.

“Today we trained in the morning and prepared the game as best as possible.

“They apply incredible because they have the right mentality to do it. All of them.

“Starts with Eddy, ends with Jack. They were really outstanding.”

After collecting a hard-earned and well-deserved three points, there was a touching gesture from the manager and his players as they conducted a lap of appreciation.

Guardiola said it was to say thank you to the fans for their support and a moment he thoroughly enjoyed.

“I would like to do it every single home game. I would love it,” he added.

“It’s gratitude for our fans. They come to see us and we share the moment together. It’s really nice.”
