Events and matches - good or bad - that happened on this day in our history....

8 May

1993

City host Everton on the final day of the 1992/93 season knowing a win could possibly secure a third successive fifth place finish in the Premier League.

However, Peter Reid’s side concede three goals in a disastrous first half and though David White’s header and Keith Curle’s penalty got us back in the game, Everton go on to win 5-2 to leave us ninth in the table.

1999

City end the regular season on a high, scoring four without reply in an emphatic victory over York City at Maine Road.

Paul Dickov, Kevin Horlock, Jeff Whitley and Danny Allsopp were on target as Joe Royle’s men guaranteed third place in Division 2 to set up a playoff semi-final with sixth place Wigan Athletic.

City had slipped to a disastrous 2-1 defeat at York in December, a game widely regarded as the lowest point in the Club’s history and this win, which relegated the Minstermen, went some way to healing that wound.

2004

Kevin Keegan’s City lose 2-1 away at Middlesbrough in our final away game of the 2003/04 campaign.

All the goals come in the first half at the Riverside, with Paulo Wanchope giving us hope after Massimo Maccarone and Szilard Nemeth had put the hosts ahead.

Wanchope’s goal galvanised us, but we spurned several chances and were unable to find an equaliser after having a second goal disallowed.

2018

City’s FA WSL title chances are dealt an agonising blow as we lose 1-0 to Liverpool.

The damage is done by the on-loan Bethany England, who heads past Karen Bardsley in the 10th minute to secure a three points which also benefit her parent club and our title rivals, Chelsea.

Nick Cushing’s side pour forward in numbers but are unable to find an equaliser on what proves to be a disappointing and costly day.

Birthdays

Former striker, Johnny Williamson, turns 90 today.

He made 62 appearances for the Club between 1950 and 1955 and was joint top scorer in the 1952/53 season with 12 goals.

Andy Dibble is celebrating his 55th birthday.

Our former goalkeeper made 140 appearances across eight seasons in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with injury disrupting his career after his first two years at Maine Road.

He is currently a goalkeeping coach at Cardiff City.

Laurent Charvet celebrates his 47th birthday today.

The French defender played 24 times over two seasons at the start of the millennium and was part of the squad that won Division One in 2001/02.
