Saints v City: Guardiola reveals latest team news

PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW

On Southampton, Guardiola said: “It’s an away game, it’s better to play at home. They are in a difficult position. A new manager.

“We knew with Ralph how we struggled every season. They have changed some patterns and movements, that is normal and we have to adapt and we will try to impose our game and win the game.

“We want to reach the semi final tomorrow.”

The boss added: “We won it and it’s a competition.

“There are competitions more than the Carabao Cup but we don’t choose competitions.

“In the game against Southampton you have to try to reach semi-finals. We are in the quarter finals and if you win you have the opportunity to play another final.

“Knowing the opponents that are there are so strong. This is what we’ve done over many years.”

Previous meeting

Our last meeting with Southampton was a 4-0 Premier League victory back in October, when the Saints were still managed by Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Joao Cancelo opened the scoring with an excellent solo effort in the 20th minute before Phil Foden doubled the lead with a chip over our former Academy goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.

A Riyad Mahrez volley shortly after the break made it three for the Blues and the scoring was completed by Erling Haaland, turning home a Cancelo cross.

Last time out

Goals from Riyad Mahrez (2), Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden sent us through to the next stage of the FA Cup against Chelsea on Sunday.

Mahrez opened the scoring on 23 minutes with a 25-yard free-kick he won himself before World Cup winner Alvarez doubled the lead from the penalty spot on 30 minutes as he drilled it low and left past Kepa.

City scored a majestic team goal on 38 minutes that had the Etihad in raptures.

Rodrigo floated an inch-perfect ball into Mahrez on the right, who fed the onrushing Kyle Walker. Our skipper for the day then centred for Foden who made no mistake with a clinical finish.

Mahrez completed the scoring on 84 minutes after firing home from the spot, after Foden had been upended.

cup runs so far

City have reached the last eight with victories over Chelsea and Liverpool. Goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez saw us past Chelsea in November before we were 3-2 winners against Liverpool on 22 December.

Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez and Nathan Ake scored for City after Liverpool had twice equalised.

Southampton have defeated Cambridge United, Sheffield Wednesday (on penalties) and Lincoln City to reach the last eight.
