PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW
Pep Guardiola has given an injury update ahead of our trip to Southampton on Saturday.
The City boss, speaking at his Friday afternoon press conference, was asked whether Riyad Mahrez might make a return to the Club after Algeria were knocked out of the AFCON at the first hurdle.
But our current top scorer won’t feature against the Saints after being afforded a rest period.
“Now he has a holiday for a week,” said Pep.
“After the AFCON, he has permission for one week off and will come back with the team next week.”
Guardiola was also asked for a fitness update on Nathan Ake and Oleksandr Zinchenko.
Ake has already played 14 times this season - more than the entire 2020/21 campaign - and has been in excellent form.
Zinchenko, who has played a dozen times this season, hasn’t been available since the Boxing Day win over Leicester City.
It was mixed news on the defensive pair’s progress.
“Nathan is ready, Zinchenko, no,” he said.
tEAM NEWS
Ruben Dias returns as City make one change for this evening’s latest Premier League assignment away to Southampton.
Pep Guardiola brings Dias back into the starting XI in the only switch from the side that beat Chelsea 1-0 in last weekend’s top of the table clash at the Etihad.
The Portuguese centre half is restored to the side in place of John Stones and will skipper City at the St Mary’s Stadium.
Stones reverts to the bench with Nathan Ake also back in the City matchday squad after recovering from the injury that forced him to miss the Chelsea game.
TEAMS
CITY XI: Ederson, Walker, Dias (c), Laporte, Cancelo, Rodrigo, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Foden, Grealish, Sterling
Subs: Carson, Slicker, Stones, Ake, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Jesus, McAtee, Wilson-Esbrand
SOUTHAMPTON: Forster, Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud, Romeu, Ward-Prowse (c), Redmond, S Armstrong, Adams, Broja
Subs: Cabellero, Valery, Stephens, Lyanco, Diallo, Elyounoussi, Walcott, Long, A Armstrong
LAST TIME OUT
City continued our winning run thanks to a crucial 1-0 win over Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium.
Kevin De Bruyne struck a wonderful curling shot in the 70th minute to seal the points for the champions, seeing us increase our advantage over the London-side to 13 points in the Premier League standings.
FORM GUIDE
Guardiola‘s side go into the game off the back of 12 consecutive Premier League victories, and will look to further increase our gap at the top of the table.
Southampton, meanwhile, have only won two of their last ten games, their most recent defeat coming at the hands of Wolves, who triumphed 3-1 at Molineux.
PREVIOUS MEETING
City and Southampton played out a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium back in September. Raheem Sterling thought he had bagged another 90th minute winner against the Saints at the Etihad only to be denied by the offside flag.
