Pep Guardiola preview
Following his return from recovery of a routine back operation, Pep Guardiola addressed the media on Friday afternoon ahead of our trip to London.
Guardiola confirmed that three key players will be unavailable for selection for our clash with West Ham.
Discussing Jack Grealish and John Stones, Guardiola said: “They are both injured. They aren’t able for tomorrow.
“I don’t know (how long for) - I don’t think they will be ready for Red Star, but we will see, step by step.
“The injury for Jack is not muscular, but he has an incredible knock on his knee. Still the damage is there.
“John is still a little better, but has a disturbance in his muscles.”
Mateo Kovacic will also be out of action on Saturday.
“It is something muscular, and not a big issue but he’ll be out for tomorrow.”
Previous meeting
City overcame West Ham’s stubborn resistance to eventually win 3-0 and return to the top of the Premier League table.
On what was an historic night at the Etihad, Nathan Ake headed the Blues in front to calm the nerves of the home support five minutes into the second period.
Erling Haaland doubled City’s lead as he scored the goal that made him the Premier League’s all-time record goal-scorer in a single season with 35 - he had 51 in all competitions - and his sumptuous chip was fitting of such a landmark.
Phil Foden‘s stunning late volley wrapped up victory - the 1000th goal of Pep Guardiola‘s era at the Club - though it was a hard-earned three points.
Last time out
An Erling Haaland hat-trick helped City move back to the Premier League summit and maintain our 100% start to the 2023/24 campaign with a 5-1 win over Fulham at the Etihad Stadium.
The Norwegian’s seventh treble in sky blue rounded off a remarkable week for our number nine, whose first of the afternoon saw him become the quickest player to 40 Premier League goals.
Julian Alvarez had handed City the lead on the half hour, but the visitors replied almost instantly through Tim Ream.
But Nathan Ake headed home on the stroke of half-time to restore our advantage, despite heavy protests from the Fulham players and coaching staff who felt Manuel Akanji had interfered from an offside position.
After the break, though, Haaland took centre stage to see City into the international break in style.
