Alex Greenwood says she and her City teammates are full of confidence heading into Saturday’s Continental Cup final against Chelsea.

Gareth Taylor’s side will lock horns with the current holders at AFC Wimbledon’s Plough Lane, with kick-off scheduled for 17:15 (UK).

City were edged out by a single goal in our most recent encounter with Chelsea in February, but Greenwood insists that the defeat has little bearing on this weekend’s encounter.

Indeed, while the defender is under no illusions about the threat Emma Hayes’ side will pose, she believes City have what it takes to come out on top and claim the trophy for a fourth time in our history.

“Make no mistake, we know their qualities and we know they’ve got top quality internationals, but so have we,” she insisted in a pre-match press conference.

“We’ve got a number of players who have experienced this before and won trophies year after year.

“We go into the game really confident, looking forward to it and fully prepared for what they’ll bring.

“Since that game (our previous meeting) we’ve had some positive results.

“Obviously, we took a lot away from that game that we could work on. Like (Gareth Taylor) said, we did everything but score on the day.

“But it’s a different game, a different competition on Saturday and one that we’re looking forward to.”

To add to this weekend’s excitement, the Continental Cup final will be played in front of a sell-out crowd.

And although Kingsmeadow, Chelsea’s home ground, sits just six miles from Saturday’s venue, Greenwood is confident that City’s travelling support will more than play our part in an enthralling atmosphere.

She said: “Our fans are great anyway, so I expect nothing less.

“It’s around the corner for Chelsea but knowing our fans there’ll be a large number travelling down as well as family and friends, loud as always.

“I’m sure it will be level on the day in terms of fans, but for us it’s great to have a sold-out crowd and a great atmosphere to play in front of.”

After negotiating a difficult few months earlier in the season, compounded by an unprecedented injury list, City enter Saturday’s clash off the back of an impressive run of form.

Gareth Taylor’s side have lost just one of our last 12 matches and put Manchester United to the sword in our most recent outing.

And Greenwood has shed some light on the positive atmosphere in the dressing room ahead of this weekend, explaining what it would mean to the players if we were to come back to the City Football Academy with some silverware.

“(The mood is) really positive, (we’re) excited,” the City defender reflected.

“We’ve had a good couple days training, obviously on the back of a win as well at the weekend, really positive vibes in the camp and we’re looking forward to getting to London.

“(A win) would be massive. We work hard all season for these trophies, these moments in games.

“We’ve had a tough season with injuries and other things going on but we’ve just cracked on, worked hard as a team and I think that’s why we’re in the position we are in now.

“Hopefully we come away with the victory on Saturday.”
