Gareth Taylor preview
Gareth Taylor says he’s still unsure if Alex Greenwood will be fit to face Brighton on Sunday.
Greenwood suffered a head injury during the recent international break and has had to sit out our meetings with Arsenal and Liverpool in the last week.
“Alex has been assessed, it’s a daily one,” he said in Friday’s pre-match press conference.
“We’ll know a little bit more tomorrow but it’s quite tight for the weekend. She’s out on the pitch but limited in the aerial things she can do. We’ll know more in 24 hours. When there’s a doubt there’s no doubt for me. It’s wise to be sensible with that type of injury.”
The boss was encouraged by Demi Stokes’ return to the matchday squad for the midweek Continental Cup victory at Liverpool.
“Demi was back on the bench on Wednesday night and it’s great to have her back” he stated.
Previous meeting
Gareth Taylor’s side travelled to the Broadfield Stadium in March aiming to extend our unbeaten league run to 13 games.
But against a dogged Seagulls side, success in East Sussex was far from a formality with Amy Merrick’s side battling to preserve their top-flight status.
We took the lead through Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw’s poked effort which wrote her name in the Club’s history book as she became the highest-scoring player for our Women’s team in a single season.
The strike represented her 25th goal of the season – taking her above Nikita Parris’ tally of 24.
However, the hosts hit back on the cusp of half-time when Elisabeth Terland volleyed an unstoppable effort past Sandy MacIver.
But with the game looking likely to end in a draw as we battled to break down a stern Brighton defence, Bunny popped up in the 89th minute to snatch three points with a coolly taken strike.
Last time out
A stunning second half brace from Chloe Kelly helped City maintain our 100% start to the Continental Cup with a 4-3 win over Liverpool on Wednesday.
The winger sent an unstoppable half-volley into the top corner to hand us the lead with 20 to play, before doubling her account with a clinical low drive to seal the win.
City had taken the lead through Filippa Angeldahl, but found ourselves behind when Gemma Bonner and Natasha Flint struck either side of the break at Prenton Park.
Jess Park tapped home an equaliser soon after, with Kelly’s brace enough to ensure Mia Enderby’s effort deep into stoppage time was just a consolation.
It means we sit top of Group B in the Conti Cup with two wins from our opening two matches.
