Team news

Gareth Taylor says Ellen White is in contention to start. The City and England striker returned to the matchday squad for Thursday night’s Continental Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur, introduced from the bench for the final ten minutes having missed last weekend’s FA Cup triumph at Nottingham Forest.

Previewing Sunday’s crunch league visit to Kingsmeadow, Taylor explained the forward is pushing to start, alongside Alanna Kennedy, Hayley Raso and new signing Julie Blakstad, while captain Steph Houghton is still doubtful.

Previous meeting

City suffered a day to forget, falling to a 4-0 reverse the last time the two sides met at the Academy Stadium in November.

The visitors got their noses in front inside three minutes when Jessie Fleming pounced on a loose pass on the edge of the City box, before Sam Kerr tapped home a second on the stroke of half-time.

Gareth Taylor’s side, cheered on by a bumper home crowd, were perhaps the better of the two sides across the opening 45, with Caroline Weir forcing a fine early save from Ann-Katrin Berger and Lauren Hemp having a strong penalty claim waved away by referee Rebecca Welch.

But two further goals in the space of three second half minutes from Fran Kirby and Magdalena Eriksson put the result beyond doubt before the hour mark.

Last time out

City reached the Continental Cup Final with a 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night.

Goals from Jess Park, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Lauren Hemp helped see Gareth Taylor‘s side past Spurs in dominant fashion at the Academy Stadium.

It was also a night to celebrate for Julie Blakstad, with the Norwegian attacking midfielder making her debut from the bench 72 minutes in.

City will go on to face Chelsea at Plough Lane on Saturday 5 March in the Conti Cup showpiece, as we hope to claim the trophy for a fourth time.

City come into Sunday’s clash in sparkling form, having won eight of our last nine matches in all competitions.
