Team news

Gareth Taylor says Ellen White is in contention to start. The City and England striker returned to the matchday squad for Thursday night’s Continental Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur, introduced from the bench for the final ten minutes having missed last weekend’s FA Cup triumph at Nottingham Forest.

Previewing Sunday’s crunch league visit to Kingsmeadow, Taylor explained the forward is pushing to start, alongside Alanna Kennedy, Hayley Raso and new signing Julie Blakstad, while captain Steph Houghton is still doubtful.

Previous meeting

City suffered a day to forget, falling to a 4-0 reverse the last time the two sides met at the Academy Stadium in November.

The visitors got their noses in front inside three minutes when Jessie Fleming pounced on a loose pass on the edge of the City box, before Sam Kerr tapped home a second on the stroke of half-time.

Gareth Taylor’s side, cheered on by a bumper home crowd, were perhaps the better of the two sides across the opening 45, with Caroline Weir forcing a fine early save from Ann-Katrin Berger and Lauren Hemp having a strong penalty claim waved away by referee Rebecca Welch.

But two further goals in the space of three second half minutes from Fran Kirby and Magdalena Eriksson put the result beyond doubt before the hour mark.

Last time out

City reached the Continental Cup Final with a 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday night.

Goals from Jess Park, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Lauren Hemp helped see Gareth Taylor‘s side past Spurs in dominant fashion at the Academy Stadium.

It was also a night to celebrate for Julie Blakstad, with the Norwegian attacking midfielder making her debut from the bench 72 minutes in.

City will go on to face Chelsea at Plough Lane on Saturday 5 March in the Conti Cup showpiece, as we hope to claim the trophy for a fourth time.

Form Guide

City come into Sunday’s clash in sparkling form, having won eight of our last nine matches in all competitions.

Our unbeaten run extends back to mid-November, and we currently sit fifth in the FA Women’s Super League - four points behind third-placed Manchester United.

Chelsea sit second - four points behind league leaders Arsenal but with a game in hand.

Since a 4-0 defeat to Wolfsburg in December, Emma Hayes side are unbeaten in their last five, winning four.

Both City and Chelsea were victorious in the Continental Cup semi-finals in midweek to set up a mouth-watering Final clash where the two sides will meet at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane in March.

Stats

• City are looking to avoid losing both WSL meetings with Chelsea in a single season for the first time, with this campaign the eighth different season to have two such games against the Blues.

• Since Gareth Taylor was appointed Head Coach ahead of the 2020/21 WSL campaign, City have won more away top-flight matches than any other side (13), which includes each of our last four.

• City have scored more goals from outside the box than any other side in WSL this season (7), with a league-high 24% of our goals coming from distance so far this term.

• Chelsea have gone unbeaten in each of their last nine WSL matches against City (W3 D6), alternating between a draw and a win in each of the last six clashes.

• Emma Hayes’ side ended their two-match winless run in the WSL (D1 L1) last time out against West Ham, whilst also taking their winning run on home soil to nine matches, conceding just one goal in these games. Only once before have the Blues enjoyed a 10-game winning run at home in the competition, managing to secure victory in 14 successive matches between September 2019 and January 2021.

• So far in this WSL campaign, Chelsea have faced the fewest shots (63), fewest shots on target (23), conceded the fewest goals (6) and have the lowest xG against tally (5).

Georgia Stanway (5 goals in 12 games), who has equaled her top-flight goal tally from last season in nine fewer appearances (5 in 21), has netted more times against Chelsea for City than any other current player at the club (3), though each of those have come in home matches.

• Beth England netted her 50th WSL goal in Chelsea’s last match with West Ham, doing so in her 119th appearance. Her three league goals this season have all come from the bench, having scored just four times as a substitute in the competition prior to this season (32 apps).

• Sam Kerr has found the back of the net in each of her last three WSL appearances against City (3 goals) – only Fran Kirby vs Sunderland (5), Fran Kirby vs Birmingham (4) and Eniola Aluko vs Doncaster Rovers (4) have scored in four or more consecutive games against a single WSL opponent for the Blues.
