After scoring a hat-trick in an emphatic 4-0 win over Colombia earlier this month, Mewis was then forced off in a second international against the Colombians after injuring her ankle.
Though now back at the CFA with her City team mates, the manager revealed that Sunday’s game would come too soon for the American World Cup winning midfielder to return but added he hoped she would be fit to resume action early next month.
“Sam’s come back and it’s just working with the scan a bit of old injury mixed with a new,” Taylor confirmed.

“She’s looking good after a few checks. I think this weekend will be too soon for her but there’s a good chance she’ll be back next week.
“Sam is positive; she felt it was better than it showed and that just shows the type of person she is.”
The boss also provided an injury update on central defender Bonner (ankle) and full-back Stokes (knee) who have both been sidelined of late.
“I spoke to Gemma today,” Taylor added.
“She’s progressing nicely but I think we’ll be without her for the next couple of weeks. It was a nasty injury and has left us short.
“Demi Stokes is still struggling so we’re going to ask the players to step up and they’ve done it brilliantly.
“We’ve been low on numbers but the group has done really well to stick six points on the board but we are looking to draw on each player as much as we can.

“There are a few niggles and fatigue. The amount of effort last week with one of the games being after extra time, we understand a few will be missing but we hope they are back sooner.”
Taylor also spoke about his delight at integrating new American signing Abby Dahlkemper into the City squad following her arrival from North Carolina Courage earlier this month.
The USA World Cup winner has already begun working with her new team-mates after being on international duty with new Club colleagues Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle.
But the boss stressed that the central defender would need time as she adjusts to life at a new Club and in a new country.
“We’ve been really pleased and delighted to have her with us (but) we need to give her some time,” Taylor added.
“Looking forward to working with her and it’s important to understand that some players take time to adapt from a different country.
“So, we need to support her in the right manner.”
Sunday’s game marks the second half of the league season with City currently in third place in the table,
Taylor said he felt the side was in good shape looking ahead - especially after successive seven goal hauls against Aston Villa and Brighton - and pointed to the next few games with – huge matches against Manchester United and Arsenal on the horizon as potentially pivotal.
“With 11 games we’re exactly halfway. We’ve had good moments and difficult moments but as this point we’re in good shape and we have it in our hands,” Taylor added.
“It’s difficult to assess (our league opponents) with the game in hands. We have one on United and Chelsea do too. Chelsea have started strong.
“The games we’ve got coming up in the next few weeks will have a big say on what will happen with the title.
“But we’ve got a big game against West Ham where we need three points.”
