FORM GUIDE

City come into the meeting with the Reds with a spring in our step and looking to extend our winning streak to nine in all competitions.

Across the victories, two have come in the Conti Cup as we began our defence of the trophy in perfect fashion by beating Blackburn 6-0 and Sunderland 3-0.

Liverpool have also been going well in the competition and have won all three of their fixtures, placing them the top of Group B.

PREVIOUS MEETING

The last meeting between the sides produced a close encounter with City eventually coming out on top in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Goals from Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Hayley Raso either side of Katie Sengel’s strike saw us record a 2-1 victory at the Academy Stadium.

Raso came off the bench to hand Taylor’s side success with 15 minutes remaining to continue our impressive form.

Gareth Taylor Preview

“Liverpool have come out in every game and played with an identity of how they want to play with and without the ball.

“Sometimes you don’t always get it right in preparation… [but] with Liverpool we know they’re aggressive in their pressing.

“If we can be effective in our build-up, in the game here, we won 2-1 but could’ve been out of sight.

“That’s the risk when you play that type of game and go player for player. It can make it really difficult if you’re effective at the top end of the pitch.”

LAST TIME OUT

City come into the cup clash off the back of comfortable 3-1 league win over Brighton.

The victory for Gareth Taylor’s side extended our winning streak to eight games in all competitions, and we raced into a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes.

An own goal from the Seagulls’ Veatriki Sarr in the 11th minute was followed by a Julie Blakstad diving header to hand City a commanding advantage.

In what was an electric opening half, Laura Coombs pulled us further ahead when she impressively fired home from range.

Despite periods of dominance from the hosts following the interval, we were unable to add to our lead before former City forward Lee Geum-min grabbed Brighton a consolation in the third minute of second half stoppage time.

Nonetheless, victory tightens our grip on fourth place in the WSL, moving us to within three points of Arsenal in third.

CITY V UNITED: ETIHAD DERBY

City welcome Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 11 December.

Kick-off is scheduled for 12:30 (UK), with tickets selling fast for our third-ever women’s match at the Etihad.

We hosted Everton there back in May 2014, before welcoming our local rivals in September 2019, when Caroline Weir’s wonder strike saw us run out 1-0 winners in front of what was then a WSL record crowd, and what remains a club record of 31, 213 fans.

With over 40,000 tickets already sold, it promises to be another historic occasion.
