Gareth Taylor preview

“It’s the perfect game to come back to and one the players are really looking forward to.

“With Derbies, coaches always say they don’t have to get the players up for it. It’d be perfect for us if we get three points on the board. We want to achieve that.

“We did that on our own turf last year. We were in control and give credit to United – they fought back – but we showed our dominance.

“These games are never won or lost in the first half – you have to be at it all the way through to the final minute. That’s what makes these games so special.

“It’ll be even more special with supporters back. The players look forward to these games – both teams want to win and are competitive. It’s an exciting one for us to look forward to.”

LAST TIME OUT

City fell to a third successive FA Women’s Super League defeat, suffering a 2-0 reverse at home to West Ham United.

A Dagný Brynjarsdóttir header and long-range Yui Hasegawa chip claimed the points at the Academy Stadium.

Though Gareth Taylor‘s side carved plenty of chances to level - Laura Coombs striking the post in injury time - the Hammers defended valiantly to preserve their clean sheet and killed the contest in the final seconds to inflict the home side’s fourth defeat in five games.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTER

Goals from Lucy Bronze, Lauren Hemp and a Caroline Weir stunner helped City humble Manchester United 3-0 to claim the bragging rights back in February.

It was Bronze who struck gold first, volleying home through a crowd of bodies just before the 25-minute mark.

United pushed Gareth Taylor’s side all the way, with Christen Press in particular going close, but Hemp added a second on the rebound - City’s 500th goal - with 20 minutes to go.

And Weir killed the game off with a goal of the season contender ten minutes later, chipping Mary Earps from outside the box to seal the points and local bragging rights in spectacular fashion.

FORM GUIDE

City head into the game in disappointing form with four defeats in our last five, looking to return to winning ways in the FA WSL following three successive defeats.

We currently sit ninth in the table with one win and three defeats from our opening four games.

United have won three of their four games of 2021/22, defeating Reading, Leicester and Birmingham to climb to fourth in the table - their only defeat came at home to Chelsea: a 6-1 reverse.

Stats

  • City have never lost a Manchester Derby in the FA WSL in three previous meetings (D1 L2), scoring six goals in the process. Our only league visit to Leigh Sports Village ended 2-2 last season.
  • Gareth Taylor‘s side are one of only two sides that Manchester United have faced but haven’t beaten in the FA WSL (D1 L2), along with Chelsea (D1 L3).
  • We are looking to go unbeaten in our first four league games against a specific opponent for the eighth time, having achieved this against Brighton (W3 D1), Everton (W4), Notts County (W2 D2), Reading (W4), Sunderland (W4), West Ham (W4) and Yeovil (W4).
  • Manchester United have won six of their last seven Women’s Super League matches (L1), with their only defeat in this run a 6-1 defeat at home to Chelsea in their last home match. They have never lost consecutive home matches in the competition.
  • In their first 19 home FA Women’s Super League matches, Manchester United only conceded 10 goals, an average of 0.53 per game, before shipping six in their 6-1 loss to Chelsea in their last home game in the competition.
  • Caroline Weir has netted twice in three WSL appearances against Manchester United, scoring once every 92 minutes played – her best minutes per goal ratio against an opponent in the competition.
  • Having scored in the 3-0 home win in February, Lauren Hemp is looking to score in her first two WSL games against a specific opponent for the fourth time, having already done so against Everton, Sunderland and West Ham.
  • Ella Toone – who played five games for City in the FA WSL between May 2017 and May 2018 – has been directly involved in 10 goals in her last seven Women’s Super League matches (5 goals, 5 assists) for Manchester United.
