The United States star – and World Cup winner – is no stranger to the big stage, but she is yet to grace the turf of England’s national stadium.
Starring in her first game for the Club last weekend in a friendly triumph over Everton, our new recruit has been readying herself for a first taste of competitive action, as Gareth Taylor’s side kick off the new season with an FA Women’s Community Shield clash against league winners Chelsea.
Mewis could not have picked a more difficult assignment for her first test in City colours but asserts she is relishing the challenge.
“I’m really excited,” she smiled. “I’ve heard a lot about the tradition of the Community Shield and it’s really cool that it’s at Wembley.
“I’ve never played there before so I’m really excited to get the season under way with the girls and hopefully, have a good performance.
“Chelsea won the league last year and they’re a great side. It’s going to be a really competitive, tough game.
“I’ve played against Sam Kerr a lost in the NWSL and Jessie Fleming has also just joined – I know her a little bit from UCLA.
“It’s definitely going to be a challenge but one of the reasons I came here was to really be challenged at a high level – to compete.
“I’m happy we’re being tested early on so we can know what to work on and be ready for the rest of the season.
“I’m new to the Club and to represent them is an honour. I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
Awarded the 2019/20 title on a points per game basis, Chelsea edged City to the crown and Mewis added she can feel the desire for success amongst the squad.
“Everybody is really hungry and motivated to succeed,” she added.
“It’s really exciting. Having multiple trophies to compete for is new to me – it’s not something we have in America – and it’s something I love. It will be cool.
“The squad depth is really deep. There are multiple people who could start in every spot and it’s really good to have that internal competition of everyone pushing every day to do their best.
“There are a lot of games and having that depth means everyone gets the chance to play and perform at a high level.

“The girls are so welcoming. Sometimes, being new to a team, you don’t really know where you stand socially but I already feel so welcomed.
“The girls genuinely want me to succeed and that’s a nice feeling.
“Having them to help ad support me out on the field, giving me tips and advice, really helps and I’m really grateful.
“The more I get to know everyone, the better it will be but I know already there’s a really high standard and I know there are challenges coming,
“I feel I’m already learning so much from the girls and the staff. The girls are really technical and I’m learning the style – moving the ball around quickly and keeping it on the ground.
“So far, it’s been everything I hoped for. The girls are really welcoming and the soccer is at a really high level.
“Hopefully, we can start the season with a trophy on Saturday.”
