ACCOMPLiSHED KEEPER
The arrival of distinguished goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma signalled the final piece of summer transfer business for City in 2025 as Pep Guardiola put the finishing touches to his refreshed side.
Having just helped previous employers Paris Saint Germain to their maiden Champions League success, the 6ft 5 stopper appeared the perfect player to take the reins from Ederson between the sticks in more than just stature.
A product of AC Milan’s academy, he broke into the Italian giants’ senior side at the age of just 16 years and 342 days – making his debut in 2015.
He would then quickly establish himself as their number one due to his impressive displays domestically and on the European stage and after helping AC Milan to a second-place finish in 2020/21 – he was named Serie A’s Best Goalkeeper of the Year.
Following that success, Donnarumma chose to embark on a new challenge with PSG where he helped them to Ligue 1 title in his maiden season in 2021/22 where he was also crowned the Yashin Trophy winner at the 2021 Ballon d’Or awards.
It represented the beginning of a trophy-laden spell in France’s capital as he added a further three top-flight crowns, two Coupe de France cups and three Trophee des Champions to his CV – but at Munich’s Allianz Arena is where he wrote his name into PSG folklore.
Having performed phenomenally in their journey to the Champions League final held in Germany, he kept a clean sheet in PSG’s 5-0 win over Inter as they were crowned Champions of Europe for the first time.
And on the international stage, he has tasted similar success by playing a crucial role in Italy’s Euros triumph in 2020 – where he made two penalty shootout saves against England in the showpiece before being named Player of the Tournament by UEFA - the first time the prestigious award had ever been presented to a goalkeeper.
Arriving at the Etihad Stadium on a five-year deal in the summer of 2025, he will be aiming to add yet more major honours to his sparkling CV.
