Following Steve Eyre’s move to Rochdale earlier this summer, City have appointed Sadler to work with the youth side under the watchful eye of Academy manager Scott Sellars.
Before turning to coaching at the age of 21, Sadler progressed through the Newcastle United ranks as a promising goalkeeper, but after spells with Manchester United, Burnley and Gretna, he decided that his time would best be served turning away from the playing side of the game and instead gaining his coaching badges.
In 2001, he re-joined Newcastle’s youth set-up as a coach and was soon promoted to assistant Academy Director. Six years of hard work were duly rewarded in 2007 when Sadler was appointed reserve team manager – winning the Northumberland Senior Cup during his time in the post.
He re-united with former Newcastle boss Glen Roeder as assistant manager of Norwich in 2008, but his time at Carrow Road was cut short as Roeder was sacked within a month of Sadler’s arrival.
To add to his coaching experience, Sadler moved to non-league side Blyth Spartans and had spells at Team Northumbria and Gateshead before being appointed Head of Plymouth Argyle’s Centre of Excellence last summer.
Despite arriving at Home Park to focus on youth development, the departure of assistant manager John Carver in December 2010 resulted in Sadler taking on a number of first team responsibilities and helping out City old boy Peter Reid.
Sadler’s work is already underway, having travelled with the Academy on their pre-season trip to Oberndorf, Germany.
