PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW
Pep Guardiola says he is not surprised by the impact that Unai Emery has had at Aston Villa ahead of their visit to the Etihad Stadium.
“[They are] excellent the way they play,” the City boss said at his prematch press conference. “Unai Emery and the consistency in every season, Villa is impressive and always he has done really well.
“It’s not a surprise the quality of him and his management and the quality of the team.
“I didn’t watch all games because I don’t think all managers watch all the games of opponents.
“I think he’s playing the same system. They have really good set-pieces and transitions with the two incredible fast players up front.
“The shape is really clear what they do. They can do high pressing and afterwards defend very well with a back four or back five and a really structured line. [They have] an exceptional keeper.
“That is why they are where they are, fighting to be there.”
PREVIOUS MEETING
City suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in December’s reverse fixture at Villa Park the last time the two sides met.
Leon Bailey’s deflected second-half strike was enough for the hosts to collect three points.
LAST TIME OUT
A 0-0 draw at the Etihad on Sunday evening against fellow title contenders Arsenal means the race for the summit continues.
Pep Guardiola‘s team were the better side throughout the 90 minutes but the Gunners’ resolute defensive line were able to hold off a handful of attacks with Nathan Ake and Mateo Kovacic going closest to breaking the deadlock.
TV INFORMATION
The meeting at the Etihad will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom on TNT Sports 1 and TNT Sports Ultimate.
