Gareth Taylor preview

On the Conti Cup:

“I think this competition is important to us, we won it two seasons ago, it was my second trophy I won here.

“So I think it’s a great competition and a really tough competition as you have to be pretty flawless in the group stages because there’s only one team that’s guaranteed.

“We’ve found ourselves in a group that could also include potentially Man Utd if they don’t progress in the Champions League so you’re talking about an all WSL cup competition whereas some of the other groups look a little bit like a Championship group.

“So it’s a tough group, really tough, you’ve got to be pretty faultless in it and win as many games and put as many points on the board as you possibly can because, as I say, there’s only one team who’s guaranteed to go through with the second best placed over the country.

On Everton:

“They are a difficult team to play against. We played against them in preseason.

“Brian [Sorensen], what he’s trying to do there is to be really brave in the way he plays, I like that, I think it’s to be admired.

“He’s trying to instil his style and try to manage a group who has changed with personnel and the way it’s evolving.

“But they make it really difficult, they’re progressive in play with the ball and they press really aggressively without the ball.

“I think it’s a good game for us, an exciting game and we treat the competition really seriously, we always have.”

Competition format

City have been placed in Group B, alongside Everton, Liverpool and Leicester City, playing each side once at this stage.

The winners of the five different groups will automatically qualify for the knockout stages, with the three best placed runners up also progressing to the last eight.

The knockout matches will be played over one leg, with reigning WSL champions Chelsea and Manchester United both entering the competition at this stage, should the latter progress to the Champions League group stages.

Previous meeting

City rounded off the 2022/23 campaign with a 3-2 victory over Everton at the Joie Stadium.

A brace from Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and a stunning Lauren Hemp solo effort saw Taylor’s side roar into a three-goal lead with 20 to play.

And while the Toffees pulled two late goals back, we were able to hold on to finish the season with maximum points.

Last time out

A stoppage time equaliser denied nine-player City a memorable victory over Chelsea in the WSL.

Chloe Kelly‘s spectacular early strike looked like it would be enough for Taylor’s side, who had defended valiantly having seen Alex Greenwood and Hemp both dismissed for second bookable offences.

But Guro Reiten’s 96th-minute goal meant we had to settle for a point in our first match of the season and maiden WSL fixture at the Joie Stadium.

Everton, meanwhile, will be hoping to get their first win of the campaign having lost to Leicester 1-0 at the weekend.
