GARETH TAYLOR PREVIEW

Gareth Taylor addressed the media on Monday afternoon ahead of our trip to Prenton Park on Wednesday evening.

Following Taylor’s rotation in our previous Conti Cup fixture, where we beat Everton 2-1, the boss was asked if he’d look to do the same against Liverpool.

“We changed nine players against Everton, had three suspensions and played phenomenally well,” the boss said in his pre-match press conference.

“We trust the players that we have whether we make nine changes or no changes.

“We’re always looking at being as effective as we possibly can.

“We trust the players we have and have a number of international players here who start or don’t start games. That’s the level we want to get to.”

LAST TIME OUT

City suffered late heartbreak on the road at Arsenal last time out.

Gareth Taylor’s side started the brightly in the  Barclays Women’s Super League clash and created a swathe of chances to break the deadlock.

But, against the run of play, it would be the hosts who would find the game’s first goal when Steph Catley burst into the box and rifled into the top corner.

Buoyed by their opener, Jonas Eidevall’s side were awarded a penalty soon after, but Khiara Keating fantastically saved Kim Little’s fizzing spot kick to keep the hosts’ advantage to just one goal.

Before and after the interval we were in the ascendancy and deservedly equalised midway through the second half when Chloe Kelly showed her poacher’s instinct to fire past Manuella Zinsberger.

City then pushed for the winner and carved out a number of opportunities with the England international a constant thorn in her former employers’ side.

Cruelly, though, it would be Arsenal wo collected three points when a Katie McCabe clearance to alleviate pressure was misjudged by Keating - allowing Stina Blackstenius to pass into an empty net.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTER

We suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat the last time we faced Liverpool back in May.

Natasha Dowie opened the scoring in the WSL fixture before Lauren Hemp equalised with 15 minutes remaining of the first half.

However, Missy Bo Kearns restored the hosts’ lead shortly after the interval before the goal we craved to equalise evaded us.

COMPETITON FORMAT

City have been placed in Group B, alongside Everton, Liverpool and Leicester City, playing each side once at this stage.

The winners of the five different groups will automatically qualify for the knockout stages, with the three best placed runners up also progressing to the last eight.

Taylor’s side began our campaign in the competition with a 2-1 win away at Everton.
