Kerolin gave City the lead after a typically mazy run in from the right flank to hand the hosts a one-goal advantage at the break.
Vivianne Miedema then made it two with a clinical finish after the hour following a clever scooped pass in behind from Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw.
It means City’s winning run now extends to 11 WSL matches, and we remain six points clear at the top of the table.
What happened
City had ended 2025 in style but were facing an Everton side who’s last away fixture had seen them end Chelsea’s record 34-match unbeaten run in the WSL.
Courtney Brosnan was the hero that day, and she made a tremendous save down to her right to deny Shaw inside 15 minutes, but the deadlock was eventually broken thanks to a moment of individual brilliance from Kerolin.
There might have been a hint of fortune in the deflected finish, but the build-up from the Brazilian was world class, as she scampered away from Maz Pacheco down the right and converted from a tight angle.
Everton did have the ball in the net against the run of play from a corner as half-time approached, but referee Adewunmi Soneye felt Ayaka Yamashita was fouled as the ball came into the box.
The second 45 began as the first ended, with the Toffees defending staunchly but City on top, and number two would follow just after the hour.
It was Miedema who grabbed it after fluid link-up play with Shaw had unlocked the Everton defence, with the Dutch international latching onto a chipped pass and rifling home her 92nd WSL goal.
Shaw could’ve got in on the act herself with two chances late on, only to first see Brosnan make an excellent save from close-range before she poked wide with around ten to play.
The Everton stopper continued to impress, with a smart stop preventing Alex Greenwood from making it three with a stinging drive, before Rebecca Knaak saw a header cleared off the line.
It meant City ultimately had to settle for a 2-0 win, but that won’t bother Andrée Jeglertz one bit, as the Blues registered win number 11 in a row.
New Year, Same City
City ended 2025 in style with ten successive WSL wins and a 14-match unbeaten run in all competitions but were in action for the first time in three weeks at the Joie Stadium.
After a relatively lukewarm start against a resolute Everton side, Kerolin’s opener set the tone for another impressive City performance, with Miedema putting the game to bed after the hour.
Our record winning streak in the WSL stands at 14… the Blues are edging nearer and nearer to a piece of history.
Wing Command
It was clear from the get-go that City were keen to get in behind our opponents out wide, with Lauren Hemp and Kerolin seeing plenty of action at the Joie Stadium.
Both wingers offered a huge energy boost for City, with Hemp unfortunate not to add a goal to a fantastic performance early in the second half from the left.
Kerolin, meanwhile, was able to add another goal to her tally after some clever play out wide created space for her to exploit inside.
Our duo gave the likes of Pacheco, Karen Holmgaard, Hannah Blundell and Hikaru Kitagawa - four excellent full-backs - a really tough 90 minutes.
The Engine Room
Two of City’s standout performers across 2025/26 once again stepped up to the plate against the Toffees, with Yui Hasegawa and Laura Blindkilde Brown dictating play from midfield.
They set the tone for the Blues across the 90 minutes, playing front-foot, positive passes to break the lines and get the visitors facing their own goal.
Miedema’s strike was a case in point, with Hasegawa’s surgical pass through the Everton midfielder allowing Shaw to release her fellow forward in behind.
Player of the Match
Blindkilde Brown, Kerolin and Hemp were all standouts in an excellent overall team performance, but Hasegawa’s brilliance in the midfield earns her player of the match.
A world class technician operating at the peak of her powers once again.
