NICK CUSHING PREVIEW
Nick Cushing says Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Aoba Fujino won’t be available for City’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Our Interim Head Coach confirmed that both were struggling with muscular injuries and admitted an estimated return date hadn’t yet been confirmed.
However, Cushing said he’d rely on the expertise of the Club’s medical team to determine when both can return to the fold.
He said: “Bunny Shaw came out, and she will be unavailable. Aoba is unavailable too.
“They’re two significant players that are missing [but] these moments give opportunities for other players.
“Both of them are muscle injuries. It’s going to take a few days to diagnose how long. I think they’re significant, but will leave it with the medical team.
“When you have muscle injuries, it’s ultimately not one you will turn around quickly.”
Kerolin Nicoli Preview
“I’m really happy and excited [to play in the Champions League, it’s kind of like a dream.
“But I need to be really focused on how to help the team. Now is the time to make history. We’re ready for that and will try to do our best.
“It is hard because when we look back to the game, we played really well [in the League Cup final].
“You can never understand football because we played really well but we didn’t score.
“We need to keep doing what we’re doing and when we get to the final third we need to make better decisions. That’s how we’re going to win the game, scoring goals.”
PREVIOUS MEETING
City suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to Chelsea in our previous meeting, which was just a few days ago.
It came in the Subway League Cup final on Saturday at Derby’s Pride Park.
Mayra Ramirez scored the opener for the Barclays Women’s Super League leaders in the early stages, bundling home the ball after it had clipped off skipper Laia Aleixandri.
But the 1-0 scoreline at the break didn’t tell the full story with Nick Cushing’s side showing positive intentions throughout the first 45 minutes.
Aoba Fujino bagged a deserved leveller after the break with a superb strike.
But, with the game on a knife-edge, it was Sonia Bompastor’s team who just edged it in the end when a cross deflected off Yui Hasegawa and found the back of the net.
LAST TIME OUT
Our last game against Chelsea was, of course, the Subway League Cup final on Saturday.
We’re currently in a four-game run of matches against the Londoners.
There’s this UEFA Women’s Champions League clash on Wednesday followed by Sunday’s top-flight encounter with them at the Etihad Stadium, kick-off 14:30 (UK).
Then it’s the return leg in the elite European competition at Stamford Bridge next Thursday with a 20:00 (UK) start.
Whoever wins will play the victors of Wolfsburg and Barcelona in the semi-finals.
