PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW
“Normally when you win the titles that we won they give you a chance to play for new ones - the Community Shield, Sevilla next week in the European Super Cup and then we go to Saudi Arabia in the winter.
“It will be a good opportunity. Of course we are going to try. We know the situation we are in right now. We finish two weeks after Arsenal. We start two weeks after Arsenal.
“We are not in the best way. It is a final, hopefully our mentality can help us to compete and try to win the title.
“Every pre-season is when we won the quadruple or Premier League three times in a row, we think players will drop, but they are ready.
“There will be highs and lows. We have to try to avoid a drop too much to not let the opponents especially in the Premier League and the first stages of the Champions League because it can run away from you.
“The players, I know them quite well. They are incredible competitors. We will push each other and challenge each other. We will be there.“
PREVIOUS MEETING
The 2022/23 Premier League pendulum began to swing in City’s favour the last time we faced Arsenal.
An electric 4-1 victory over the table-topping Gunners at the Etihad Stadium in April saw us close the gap on the North Londoners to two points before we lifted our this successive title by the season’s end.
Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a fizzing drive which sent the home support into raptures and John Stones’ header doubled our lead - after a lengthy VAR passage - on the stroke of half-time.
KDB increased our advantage early in the second half, before Rob Holding’s goal late on gave Arteta’s team a glimmer of hope.
However, those hopes were extinguished when Erling Haaland restored our three-goal lead in added time by squeezing an effort below Aaron Ramsdale.
LAST TIME OUT
City closed our pre-season tour of Asia with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in South Korea.
After a goalless first half, Kyle Walker saw a venomous drive early in the second cannon off the bar, before goals from Memphis Depay and Yannick Carrasco gave the La Liga outfit a two-goal lead.
With five minutes remaining Ruben Dias’ powerful header halved the deficit in what was a competitive and even contest.
Pep Guardiola says Phil Foden’s versatility means he can take on a variety of roles within the City team this season - including centre mid.
