TEAM NEWS
City make five changes for this evening’s FA Cup quarter-final clash at home to Newcastle United.
Goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno, defenders Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, along with midfielder Mateo Kovacic and winger Jeremy Doku all come into Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up.
From the side that began last weekend’s 1-1 Premier League draw at Liverpool, Ederson (muscle injury) and Kevin De Bruyne (groin issue) are both ruled out through injury.
Meanwhile John Stones, Nathan Ake and Julian Alvarez all revert to the bench.
Jack Grealish, who has been sidelined for the past two and half weeks with a groin problem, returns to the matchday squad and is also named amongst the substitutes.
Teams
CITY XI: Ortega Moreno, Walker (C), Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol, Rodrigo, Kovacic, Bernardo, Foden, Doku, Haaland
Subs: Carson, Stones, Ake, Grealish, Alvarez, Gomez, Nunes, Bobb, Lewis
NEWCASTLE: Dubravka, Botman, Schar, Lascelles (c), Burn, Guimaraes, Murphy, Willock, Longstaff, Isak, Gordon
Subs: Karius, Dummett, Ritchie, Targett, Krafth, Hall, Almiron, Anderson, Miley
pep guardiola preview
Guardiola looked ahead to the quarter-final tie with Newcastle in what will be the fourth meeting between the two sides this term.
He said: “This season and previous ones since Eddie Howe was there and the people from Saudi Arabia took over, it’s always been tight games and we don’t expect anything different.
“We have an incredible chance at home with our people. We need in home games the support of our fans like we had against [Manchester] United, I don’t remember that environment for a long time.
“Tomorrow isn’t an exception. We need it to reach the semi-final at Wembley again.”
PREVIOUS MEETING
Oscar Bobb was City’s hero in our previous meeting with Newcastle as his cool, late strike helped us to a 3-2 Premier League win at St James’ Park.
Bernardo broke the deadlock on Tyneside, but the hosts took the lead before half-time thanks to strikes from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
However, we fought back when Kevin De Bruyne equalised on 74 minutes before Bobb expertly finished in stoppage time to help us to three points.
LAST TIME OUT
City secured passage into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and continued the defence of our crown with a superb 6-2 victory at Luton in the previous round.
In our last outing, we shared the spoils at Anfield as the Blues and Liverpool played out a battling 1-1 Premier League draw.
TV INFORMATION
Our meeting with Eddie Howe’s side will be broadcast live in the UK on BBC One, BBC Sport Online and BBC iPlayer.
