Team news

Gareth Taylor says Steph Houghton will not be in contention. The City and England skipper has not featured since the 1-1 draw with Arsenal, having suffered a setback on her return from an Achilles injury.

The captain was not included in Sarina Wiegman’s 24-strong squad for the Lionesses’ Arnold Clark Cup tournament later this month and Taylor admits patience is needed in regard to her comeback.

Asked of the latest team news, Taylor has no new injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s eagerly-awaited visit of United with the players all pushing to feature in the crunch clash.

“We’ll just reinforce the positives. We focus on the opposition, strengths and weaknesses and see how we can exploit; how we engage without the ball as well, which will be key.

“We’re on our home patch, we expect to put on a performance and usually, that gives us a good chance of winning games.

“Hopefully, there will not be another red card for us but sometimes those moments can happen in a Derby, particularly a Manchester one.

“Passion will be high, the energy big but we have to remain calm and control the controllables and focus on what we can affect rather than what’s outside that.

“We’re excited and it’s one we’re looking forward to.”

Previous meeting

City suffered a 2-1 defeat to United in the Continental Cup group stage Manchester Derby.

In a feisty contest at Leigh Sports Village, City took a deserved early lead through a stunning Vicky Losada strike.

But United levelled on the half-hour, despite protests that City keeper Karima Taieb had been fouled.

And the Reds clinched victory in the dying minutes, though City would go on to earn progression to the knock-out stages with a thumping win at Leicester and have reached the Final.

Last time out

An early strike from Guro Reiten saw City edged out 1-0 by Chelsea in the FA Women’s Super League and fall to our first defeat in ten matches.

The midfielder headed home a 14th-minute opener as the hosts made the most of a fast start at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

City pressed forward in search of an equaliser with Park, Hemp and Weir all going particularly close on a frustrating afternoon.

But our efforts proved elusive, as the hosts held on to preserve their slender advantage.

Form Guide

City come into Sunday’s clash in great form, having won eight of our last ten matches in all competitions.

We currently sit sixth in the FA Women’s Super League - five points behind third-placed United.

The Reds are five points off top spot and have won seven of their last nine, although they are winless in two, having lost to Chelsea and drawn with Arsenal.

This will be the ninth meeting of the two sides with City having won three and drawn two of those encounters. We triumphed in the last Derby the Academy Stadium with a 3-0 victory, thanks to goals from Lucy Bronze and Lauren Hemp, plus Caroline Weir’s cheeky chip.

• This will be the fifth Manchester Derby in the Women’s Super League, with City having never lost to United in the competition (W2 D2)

• Gareth Taylor‘s have scored at least twice in our last three league Derbies (7 in total) and have won both home matches without conceding (1-0 and 3-0) - only against Sunderland between September 2015 and April 2018 have we won our first three home games against a specific opponent in the competition without conceding.

• In the four previous Manchester derbies in the WSL, United have either failed to score and lost, or netted exactly twice and drawn – though their two goalless defeats have come in away matches. They could lose three consecutive away games against a specific opponent in the WSL for the first time.

• United are the only side yet to lose away from home in the WSL this season (P6 W3 D3), while they have conceded the joint-fewest goals of any side on the road (4, alongside Arsenal). If they avoid defeat, they will equal their best ever unbeaten away run in the WSL – eight games between February and December 2020 (W6 D2).

• The Reds are unbeaten in their last five WSL games (W4 D1) - last on a longer run without defeat between January and December 2020 (14 games - W10 D4) - and have scored six goals from corner situations in the WSL this season, the most of any side.

• City have won 2 points per game on average when captain Steph Houghton has played this season, conceding just three goals in five games with her on the pitch. When Houghton has not featured, City have averaged only 1.3 points per game, conceding 17 goals in eight games (2.1 on average).

• Jade Moore has scored twice before against City, only netting more often in the WSL versus Everton (3). In fact, no other current Man Utd player has scored more than once against City, with Moore’s last goal coming at the Academy Stadium for Reading in October 2018.
