Midfield Maestro

Yui Hasegawa joined City from West Ham United in September 2022 and has firmly established herself as one of the WSL’s finest midfielders.

The Japanese international made the switch having impressed during a year-long spell with the Hammers in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

She made a goalscoring start to life at City, finding the net from distance in a 4-0 win over Leicester in September 2022, which set the tone for her time at the Club.

Hasegawa has been named in the PFA WSL Team of the Year in 2022/23 and 2023/24, with a place on the Ballon d’Or shortlist also following in 2023.

And while 2024/25 was a frustrating season for the Club, she would end it by being named Etihad Player of the Season.

Also a seasoned international with her homeland, she is a regular for her country since her debut in 2017 and has represented them at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Asian Cup, Olympic Games and SheBelieves Cup.

Hasegawa joined Nippon TV Beleza in her homeland aged 12 and rose through their youth ranks before moving into their senior set-up in 2013.

Going on to make over a century of appearances for the club over an eight-year spell and helping them to win the Japanese league title for five consecutive seasons, the creative midfielder earned herself a move to Europe in early 2021 with AC Milan.

After just seven months in Italy however – scoring three goals in nine outings – the playmaker put pen to paper on a two-year deal with West Ham United.

Turning out for the East London outfit on 17 occasions and finding the back of the net twice in 2021/22 – including an effort in a 2-0 victory over City - a move to the Blues would follow that summer.

She’s been a key cog in the City machine since.
