On Liverpool, he said: “They remain an exceptional team. My opinion doesn’t change for a season that had up and downs. Every team can have these up and downs.

“My opinion about Liverpool remains the same. Winning the Champions League or having a season of having up and downs. Nothing changes. Now the biggest rival is another one this season. But whatever happened in the past, always will be a big rival.”

Previous meeting

City and Liverpool last battled it out in the Carabao Cup where we put on a thrilling display during our 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium in December.  

City took an early 10th minute lead through Erling Haaland followed by a quick reply by Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho 10 minutes later.  

Riyad Mahrez gave City the advantage two minutes into the second half but once again Liverpool kept pace. A goal from Mohamed Salah one minute later levelled the playing field for a second time for the visitors.  

Centre-back Nathan Ake’s clinical headed goal in the 58th minute put us in the lead for a third and final time to send City through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.  

Last time out

City secured our spot in the semi-finals of the FA Cup after an impressive 6-0 display against Burnley where Erling Haaland tallied his sixth hat-trick of the season across all competitions.

Julian Alvarez bagged himself a second-half brace which was separated by Cole Palmer’s first goal of the season.  

Jurgen Klopp’s side last played in the league on 11 March, losing 1-0 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.  

In the week, Jurgen Klopp’s side were knocked out of the Champions League by 2021/22 winners Real Madrid. A 1-0 loss at the Bernabeu on Wednesday 15 March totalled a 6-2 loss on aggregate.
