On our goals for the season he said: “To win. Absolutely to win. That’s what we’re always about at this club, every competition we go in for we take seriously, none more so than the WSL.

“I think it is what it is. I think it’s tough now because the competition is so competitive.

“For us, it’s more about continuity with the squad we have. Bringing in Jill [Roord] who is a top player. It’s more about we don’t want to have to qualify for the Champions League.

“If we win the league hopefully that’s enough to get to the group stages outright. We’ve seen how difficult the qualification process is.

“Us personally and also other teams. For us it’s about trying to miss that out as much as we can. We know how tough it is to win the WSL because it’s 22 games.

“The levels are improving all the time. The motivation for us is always there we don’t look too much at last season although we know there were some real positive signs there.”

Previous meeting

City came out on top in a pulsating clash at the Academy Stadium in our most recent encounter with West Ham in April 2023.

A quickfire brace from Chloe Kelly saw Gareth Taylor‘s side race into a two-goal lead inside seven minutes, which was restored before the break when Laura Coombs cancelled out Emma Snerle’s clinical finish.

And while Lisa Evans would grab another for the Hammers, further strikes from Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, Steph Houghton and Mary Fowler - her first in the WSL - secured a comfortable 6-2 win for the hosts.

In our most recent trip to the Chigwell Construction Stadium, Shaw’s goal early in the second half proved the difference as City ground out a 1-0 win in January.

• West Ham United have lost eight of their nine WSL games against Manchester City, winning the other 2-0 in October 2021.
• City have a 100% away record at West Ham in the Women’s Super League, winning all four such games against the Hammers.
• Gareth Taylor‘s side completed the most passes in the Women’s Super League last season (9,754), with their average of 443 successful passes per game the fourth-best total across the big-five women’s league in Europe, behind only Barcelona (542), PSG (519) and Bayern Munich (496).
• Chloe Kelly set a new WSL record for chances created in a single season during the 2022-23 campaign (82). Indeed, it was the most by any player across the big-five European women’s leagues last season.
• Alex Greenwood played the most progressive passes in the WSL last season (141), while she also played the most successful forward passes in the league (592).
• Viviane Asseyi was involved in more WSL goals than any other West Ham player last season (9 – 6 goals, 3 assists). However, those nine goal involvements all came within her first 15 appearances, failing to score or assist in her last seven games.
